We are thrilled to announce that the RecAL project has been awarded the ÖGUT Environmental Prize 2025 (ÖGUT-Umweltpreis) in the category of “Research & Innovation for the Circular Economy.”
In a significant advancement for the steel industry, Swerim, in partnership with Stena Aluminium, has demonstrated a breakthrough by successfully utilizing upcycled salt slag—a hazardous waste byproduct from melted end-of-life aluminium scrap—in steelmaking.
EVs need aluminum with high conductivity (1xxx), for which there is currently no secondary market. Besides, the biggest shift will be in the aluminum recycling cycle itself. With the combustion-engines ban, the established “sink” for low-quality aluminum scrap based on the A226 alloy will disappear, leaving a large part of this waste stream without a final destination.
