RecAL Virtual Reality Demonstrator

Communicating complex industrial systems is not always easy. The RecAL Virtual Reality (VR) Demonstrator was developed to transform the project’s vision into an experience that is intuitive, engaging, and immediately understandable.

Rather than explaining RecAL through slides or technical documents, the VR demonstrator places users directly inside the system — allowing them to explore the circular economy of aluminium as an interactive journey.

A Guided Journey Through the Aluminium Lifecycle

At the heart of the experience is a simple but powerful idea: show the full lifecycle of aluminium from use, to recycling, to reuse, and make it tangible.

Through a short, immersive session, users step into the role of an industrial decision-maker and follow a clear narrative:

1. Choosing an application

Users begin by selecting a real-world use case — such as aviation, automotive, or construction — immediately grounding the experience in familiar industries.

2. Exploring and selecting materials

They interact with different types of aluminium material, learning how scrap, ingots, and products relate to each application, and how selection impacts outcomes.

3. Understanding the circular process

The journey then follows the material through the recycling loop — illustrating how collection, sorting, remanufacturing, and production are connected through the RecAL approach.

4. Closing the loop

The experience concludes by showing how products re-enter the cycle at end-of-life, reinforcing the idea of a continuous, circular system.

Throughout the journey, users can explore additional content such as videos, real-world examples, and partner contributions — connecting the experience directly to RecAL technologies and use cases.

Making impact visible

A key part of the VR experience is not just showing the process — but demonstrating why it matters.

At the end of the journey, users are presented with clear, visual summaries of RecAL’s impact across key industries:

  • In automotive, increased use of recycled aluminium enables higher scrap utilisation and significantly reduces waste
  • In aviation, advanced alloys and dismantling processes enable high-value, closed-loop recycling
  • In construction, improved sorting and recycling lead to higher recycled content and reduced environmental impact

These insights make the benefits of circularity concrete — linking innovation directly to sustainability outcomes.

Designed for clarity, engagement, and impact

The demonstrator is intentionally designed as a short, focused experience (2–3 minutes) that communicates the essentials quickly and effectively.

Its purpose is not to present every technical detail, but to:

  • simplify complex systems
  • create an intuitive understanding of the RecAL approach
  • leave a strong and lasting impression

By turning visitors into active participants, the experience shifts them from passive observers to engaged users — making the project more accessible and memorable.

A Key Communication Tool for RecAL

The VR demonstrator is one of RecAL’s core dissemination tools, used at conferences, workshops, and public events. It supports the project’s wider communication goals by:

  • attracting attention in busy event environments
  • making abstract concepts tangible
  • enabling meaningful discussions with stakeholders
  • Ultimately, it reflects the broader vision of RecAL itself: combining digital innovation with real-world processes to enable a more sustainable aluminium economy.
